Full Job Description

  • Assist in performing daily, periodic, and annual inspections of Locomotive in accordance with FRA regulations
  • Inspect equipment components for compliance with FRA
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks or other components to determine nature of problem and needed repair or replacement
  • Perform emergency repairs to locomotives
  • Replaces locomotive and diesel engine components including but not limited to wheels or trucks, traction motors, sprints, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors, and turbo chargers
  • Perform daily service of locomotive units: sands, waters, lubricates, and oils; wipes down and cleans unit and windows
  • Operate electrical and gas welding equipment to join a variety of metals and alloys; operate acetylene torches for cutting and/or shaping metal parts such as aluminum, cast iron, steel
  • Comply with company safety policies and procedures; must wear required personal protective equipment
  • Handle environmental issues in appropriate manner (e.g. proper disposal of filter oil, diesel fuel or other materials
  • Help maintain written and computer records for maintenance and repairs as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Description

This position is responsible for maintaining fleet of locomotives to ensure the company’s ability to serve the customer and provide reliable equipment for employees. The position is responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of the engine, mechanical, and electrical components on the locomotive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Performs daily, periodic, and annual inspections of Locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations.

· Performs periodic service on locomotives that includes: changing oil, turbo inspection, changing the engine air and air compressor and greasing couplings, fittings, traction motor gears, electrical testing and repair and fuel linkage.

· Replaces locomotive and diesel engine components including wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases and cylinder assemblies; heating equipment.

· Diagnoses malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks or other components to determine nature of problem and needed repair or replacement.

· Performs daily service of locomotive units: sands, waters, lubricates and oils; wipes down and cleans unit and windows

· Maintain proper records (preventative maintenance sheets, invoices, shipping documents, expense reports)

· Handle environmental issues in appropriate manner (e.g. proper disposal of filter oil, diesel fuel or other materials)

· Comply with company safety policies and procedures; must wear required personal protective equipment.

· Conducts periodic safety assessments on equipment according to a frequency determined by the Company

· Suggests and/or implements administrative or engineering controls to abate or minimize safety hazards. Implementation will require appropriate approvals.

· Other duties as assigned.

Job Description

  • Move trains safely in the yards and over the road.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, board and/or ride freight cars, operate track switches, inspect cars and use radio communications to control train movement.
  • Ability to work a non-standard 40-hour work week (train crews are always on-call).
  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions – including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat and be expected to work various hours, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to use a computer.
  • Must be able to count and compare numbers.
  • Must be able to solve problems quickly and react to changing conditions on the job.
  • Must have an understanding of the operation of track switches, coupling and uncoupling cars and performs other duties associated with the movement of trains, cars and engines in rail yards and on the main railroad, and pass written tests to verify competency.
  • Must have strong vision and hearing, including the ability to: see and read hand signals from near and far; distinguish between colors; visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects; see at night; and recognize changes in sounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Must possess a valid Conductor’s certificate issued by a program in compliance with 49 CFR Part 242.
  • At least six months experience as a Conductor/Brakeman.
  • Must be able to meet all hearing and vision requirements of 49 CFR Part 242 and pass a drug screening.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Must also be physically strong: able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 83 pounds infrequently.
  • Must have good balance to regularly step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks. And you must be able to walk, sit, stand and stoop comfortably.
  • Must be advanced with MS Office- including Suite Word, PowerPoint, Advanced Excel.
